About This Guide

A tall stone brick and glass lighthouse with a lava beacon at the top, visible for hundreds of blocks across sea or plains. A landmark build that serves as a navigation point, spawn marker, and the most iconic coastal structure in Minecraft. Easy to spot from distance, satisfying to build. This intermediate aesthetic build works in Minecraft Java Edition and Bedrock Edition, version 1.20+ and above. Budget around 30-45 minutes for construction — have all materials in your inventory before you begin.

Difficulty: Intermediate

The Intermediate rating reflects either multi-layered construction, a larger footprint that demands planning ahead, or simple redstone circuits. You should be comfortable with basic survival mechanics and resource gathering before starting. Budget extra time for iteration — not everything lines up perfectly the first try.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Build the Cobblestone Base Ring

On the coastline or hilltop, build a 5x5 cobblestone ring (perimeter only, hollow center) as the foundation. The wide base provides visual stability and an observation platform later. Place the lighthouse where it's visible from the sea — on a headland or cliff for maximum range.

💡 Tip: The coastline spot matters — place at the highest natural point near water. Even a 3-block elevation difference triples your lighthouse's visibility range.

Step 2: Raise the Stone Brick Shaft

From the base ring inward, build a 3x3 stone brick hollow shaft rising 10 blocks high. The shaft is hollow in the center (1x1 column) to leave room for the interior ladder. Use stone bricks for the shaft — their crafted look creates a sharp contrast with the rough cobble base.

💡 Tip: Add stone brick slabs as decorative bands every 3 blocks up the shaft. These horizontal bands break up the height and add architectural detail.

Step 3: Add the Door and Interior Ladder

In the base of the shaft (at the lowest floor level), place an oak door in the front face. Inside the hollow shaft, attach a ladder all the way up to the top. The ladder is your access to the observation deck and beacon at the top — place it against the back wall of the shaft interior.

💡 Tip: Torches on the interior shaft walls at every 3 blocks prevent mob spawning inside. A dark shaft becomes a zombie-filled death trap otherwise.

Step 4: Build the Glass Observation Deck

At the top of the shaft, expand outward to a 5x5 cobblestone observation deck rim (same as the base). Build a 3-block tall glass room on top — glass panes on all sides of the inner 3x3 area. This glass lantern room houses the beacon and gives panoramic views.

💡 Tip: Use full glass blocks (not panes) for the observation room corners — panes don't connect cleanly at corners and leave gaps that ruin the sealed look.

Step 5: Crown with the Lava Beacon

At the very top of the glass observation room, place a single lava source block in the center. The lava glows visibly at night for hundreds of blocks and creates a recognizable navigation marker. Add a stone brick roof around the lava to create the classic lighthouse lantern housing.

💡 Tip: Lava at height 14+ is visible from 200+ blocks away at night. Place a beacon block below the lava for a bonus status effect radius if you have the resources.

Step 6: Add Torches and Finishing Details

Place torches on every corner of the observation deck railing for additional light. Add fence railings around the deck edge for safety. Decorate the base with sea lanterns, banners, or slabs for a polished look. The lighthouse is now a permanent landmark visible from the sea at any time of day or night.

💡 Tip: Add a small dock or pathway leading to the lighthouse base. Navigation markers are only useful if there's a clear path to reach them.
